Making a Solitude Photograph

Posted By: Eric Nelson, April 14, 2017

I love taking photographs of Solitude Mountain Resort and the surrounding Cottonwood Canyons. Getting a great photograph of these places is part luck and part hard work. In this article, I will describe a backcountry tour up the ridgeline across from the Moonbeam base area. I travel this route several times each year, often getting no photographs worth sharing. Every once in awhile though, the conditions result in a really nice image. I'll share some of the photographs I've taken from this spot over the years and describe a little about how they are made.

Girlfriend Getaway to Solitude Mountain Resort

Posted By: Julianna Smith, April 11, 2017

Who else has some good girls in their lives? If you’re lucky like I am, you are surrounded by career-driven, smart, and talented women. These amazing attributes are also the reasons it’s hard to see these women regularly. As the cliché goes, “life gets in the way,” but it’s true and it is exactly why you need to plan a girls’ night at Solitude Mountain Resort like I did! Kidnap these busy babes from their husbands/kids/jobs/obligations and throw caution to the wind (if only for a night)! Or just invite them; you don’t have to kidnap them. They might prefer to plan ahead too, I guess.

We stayed at The Inn at Solitude, which is located conveniently in Solitude Village. The staff valet-parked my car and delivered my luggage, which let me hop on a chairlift in no time. (Insert heart-eyes emoji here.) Our room was spacious and well-lit, and fit three of us and our bags very comfortably. In fact, after I was done snowboarding for the day, I was lulled into a little après-nap by one of the big beds in our room. I couldn’t resist it’s powers! Plus, you have to be properly charged when you’ve got big evening plans with your ladies, so a nap was necessary.

2019 FIS Freestyle, Snowboarding and Freeski World Championships

Posted By: Ryan Mayfield, March 21, 2017

With the conclusion of the 2017 FIS World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain, the United States is taking center stage as the host nation for the bi-annual event. Utah ski destinations Deer Valley Resort, Park City Mountain and Solitude Mountain Resort will host skiing and snowboarding events during the 2019 FIS Freestyle, Snowboarding and Freeski World Championships, scheduled for Feb. 1-10, 2019.

Since the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Utah has established itself as one of the World’s premier centers for winter action sports, hosting two previous World Championships as well as multiple FIS World Cups and Toyota U.S. Grand Prix. The 2019 World Championships will feature over 25 different medal events across eight sports, making it the largest winter sports event Utah has hosted since the Games. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), in partnership with the Utah Sports Commission, Park City Municipal Corporation and the host resorts, are working to maximize the impact of the event both domestically and globally.

Introducing New Skiers to Solitude

Posted By: Jess & Brian Maness, January 31, 2017

There is nothing better than when out-of-town friends finally come to visit you in Utah. You’ve been talking up the mountains, the snow, and yes, the beer, for years. We were lucky enough to have the Steves in town: Steve Bergan and Stephen Mitchell of Seattle. When you finally have guests, you want to ensure that you are showing them the best that Utah has to offer. You can give them the option of getting up to Solitude Mountain Resort for some first tracks, or sleeping in and still getting a full day of skiing, since Solitude is so close. We and the Steves slept in.

How To: First Days on the Mountain

Posted By: Nick Como, January 31, 2017

First days are full of, well, firsts. First time putting boots back on (ouch!), clicking into skis or snowboards again (whoa - slippery!), riding lifts, and of course sliding down the hill. It’s sort of like riding a bike, but there’s still an awkwardness to that first day back on the mountain. Hopefully these tips will help.

First off, the word of the day is “tranquilo.” As in TAKE IT EASY! Everything will take a little longer than you expect, so make sure your expectations match. The night before, it helps to organize your gear so you don’t forget something like gloves, goggles or your wallet. I hit the opening day “oops, I forgot…”  double score and had to circle back home twice to grab forgotten items. Planning ahead will help you avoid making the same first-day mistake and having to “boomerang” home for crucial gear.

Posted By: Nick Como, December 21, 2016

Oooh baby, it’s cold outside. While staying indoors in comfy slippers, under a blanket in front of a roaring fire sounds great, storm day skiing is the best skiing. Here are a few tips on how to stay warm and chase snowflakes around the mountain.

Opening Day Check-In

Posted By: Matt Farinelli, December 14, 2016

In my experience, opening days are usually exciting but at the same time generally forgettable. As far as my all-time first days go, most have seen more icy groomers than pow turns. Well not this year. Not at Solitude.

I wasn't there for true opening day on Friday, December 2, which I was certainly bummed about since Utah just finished up a 40-inch-plus storm cycle earlier in the week. Then a little bird told me (via @skisolitude on Instagram... hint, hint) that PoHo (Powderhorn) and Eagle Express weren't opening until first thing on Saturday, December 3, and things were suddenly looking up.
