SKI Magazine Resort Review

Solitude Mountain Resort is located 34 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport, in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

500+” Average annual snowfall

1,200 Acres

8 Lifts

77 Trails

Last year, Solitude landed at No. 30 in these rankings and here it is rising up to No. 21. Is this the touch of its new Deer Valley owners? The food definitely improved this past season (No. 19), and there was a night-and-day difference in the extent and quality of the grooming (No. 9). But the realignment of the high-speed Apex lift to access a new high-speed Summit chair was a game changer. While old-timers grumbled (“Don’t spoil a good thing…the addition of the high-speed Summit lift was not an improvement”), the rest of us were thrilled to trade a long ride on two ancient lifts for two high-speed hops to the top of Honeycomb Canyon. (“The new Summit lift is wonderful. It opens up the best terrain with a good reliable lift.”) And while readers lamented the sleepy nightlife at the base village (Après, No. 29, “add some more nightlife!”) they allowed that Solitude’s proximity to Salt Lake City and its airport (Accessibility, No. 6) was a balancing factor. (“If sushi etc. is desired, it’s 20 minutes down the road.”) Solitude, with its ample snow (No. 6) and challenging off-piste terrain, has always been a jewel hidden in plain sight and its new owners seem determined to shine it up bright.  —J.P.
